2019: A YEAR OF GOALS FOR SIOT-TAL
else: ?>OVER 41.2 MILLION TONS OF CRUDE OIL DISCHARGED, 465 TANKERS BERTHED AT THE MARINE TERMINAL
The Group supports ESOF 2020 and becomes its ambassador in Austria and Germany.
Trieste, 4th February 2020 – SIOT – TAL organizes a traditional meeting in the first weeks of the year to meet the stakeholders and it has been held again today, at the Berlam Caffè – DoubleTree by Hilton in Trieste, with the participation of Stefano Fantoni, Champion of ESOF 2020, and with the representatives of Institutions and of the economic & port system of the Region.
“The year that has just ended was the year of goals for our company – commented Alessio Lilli, General Manager of the TAL Group and President of SIOT, the Italian Society for the Transalpine Oil Pipeline – we have exceeded one and a half billion tons of crude oil transported and, in August, the Rava, tanker number 20,000 in our history, berthed at the Marine Terminal. These were milestones along a route on which we are already facing the next challenges. We are aware that we are operating in a fully mature sector such as logistics and crude oil, but we see before us great possibilities both in the field of innovation and in our role within the international economic fabric. Our nature as a Group that connects Trieste, Austria and Germany enables us to serve as a bridge and link between the economies and systems of these areas – concluded Lilli – a mission that we reaffirmed yesterday in the Regional Palace by signing the quadrilateral agreement with the Technische Universität of Munich, the Eastern Adriatic Port Authority and the Italian-German Chamber of Commerce, and which will enter a new phase on the occasion of ESOF 2020″.
CRUDE OIL FIGURES – The overview of the data of the year just ended confirms the trend of substantial stability achieved by the pipeline over the last few years. In fact, 41,278,403 million tons of crude oil were discharged at the Marine Terminal by 465 tankers in 2019, figures that bring the historical totals to 1.539 billion tons transported and 20,227 ships berthed since 1967. “From 2013 the data confirm a substantially stable crude oil traffic – commented Lilli – a sign of a constant energy demand of the regions connected to our pipeline, Bavaria, Austria and the Czech Republic, and of a regularity of the system, both technically and economically, from supply to refining. Not only that, but the figures for January 2020 allow us to be optimistic about the numbers for the year that has just begun. If we compare the same month in 2019 we have gone from 3 million to 3.8 million of crude oil transported“.
ECONOMIC IMPACT – In 2019 the study carried out by the MIB Trieste School of Management on the positive impact of SIOT – TAL on the local economic fabric was also presented, which highlighted how, against a turnover of 84.5 million euros, the SIOT system generated an estimated impact between 246.9 and 282.3 million euros, consisting of direct, indirect and induced impact. “When we commissioned this study – explained Lilli – we wanted to understand and see the economic contribution created by SIOT to the benefit of the territory. The figures went beyond our expectations and showed how oil, a product that in our Region is only in transit, generates tangible value and wealth for the local economy”.
ESOF AND INNOVATION – SIOT – TAL also announced a partnership with ESOF 2020 during the meeting: “For our company innovation is a challenge – concluded Lilli – especially if we consider that our sector is now fully mature. In spite of this we inaugurated in 2018, in Austria, the first crude oil power plant in the world that recovers the energy produced by oil during its journey through the pipeline using the same principle of hydroelectric power plants. In the year just ended we achieved ISO 27001 certification on cybersecurity, a field in which we will have more news soon, and 2020 has started with the creation of the Competence Center for Port and Energy Logistics that will enable us to make our excellence know-how available to other players in the international market. It is therefore important for us to be at the side of an event like ESOF 2020, looking for an essential combination of business and innovation. For ESOF we will play our cross-border role, becoming ambassadors in Austria and Germany to emphasize the importance of this event and the central role of Trieste”.
