Environmental Protection

Environmental protection has always been our objective: the TAL Group constantly monitors the entire facility. Control systems are numerous and in constant development; procedures are defined by regulations and international best practices; their application is tested and further improved with continued emergency simulations.

The pipeline is the safest, most efficient and sustainable system to move crude oil over long distances. If the Transalpine Pipeline had not been built, the transport of crude oil by road, on tankers, would have caused traffic congestion, with around ten thousand trucks travelling every day along the Italy-Germany route and producing an extremely high carbon footprint for current environmental standards.

The pipeline does not interfere with the surrounding environment: its route, almost entirely underground, does not affect the use of the land above it and is compatible with all activities, even those of the agricultural and forestry sectors, as well as with people’s lives.
The Marine Terminal, in the Muggia Bay, has the most cutting-edge water monitoring systems and the most advanced emergency systems that guarantee immediate intervention.
The pipeline is also checked from high above: a helicopter regularly flies over the entire route in Italy and Germany in order to identify any possible faults on the surface. The route is signposted with markers that provide mileage and control room contact information for that section.
Pipeline monitoring is ensured by inspections carried out by highly qualified personnel using state-of-the-art technological tools, which can detect any problem and thus prevent damage. The integrity of the pipeline is subject to monitoring, verification and certification by international technical bodies specifically in charge of this task.
