TAL AUSTRIA WINS THE ENERGY GLOBE AWARD
else: ?>The crude oil power plant in Taimeralm, Mittersill municipality, won the Energy Globe Award asthe best environmental project of the Salzburg region.
In September 2018, TAL inaugurated the first crude oil power plant in the world in Taimeralm, 1,335 metres above sea level, within the municipality of Mittersill.
At the Energy Globe Award Salzburg, the plant – one of a kind – won twice, as the best environmental project in the category air and as the overall winner of the event, selected by the public. The Energy Globe Award distinguishes the best projects in the five categories earth, fire, water, air and youth at regional, national and international levels.
«We are very happy of this award – explained Alessio Lilli, General Manager of TAL – it proves our hard work that lasted years. I would like to thank the team and the partner companies for their great commitment, without them the project would not have come this far». Besides Lilli, also the Project Manager Markus Mühlmann participated at the Award Ceremony in Salzburg. .
A unique project in the world
One of the challenges of TAL pipeline is overcoming the Alps with an elevation gain of 1,600 metres. Thanks to the installation of a Francis turbine inside the power plant, the energy wasted in the downhill runs (e.g. at the Felbertauern) is now turned into electricity. The plant generates about 11.5 GWh per year that are used to feed the utility grid of Salzburg AG: the amount produced is 12% of TAL Austria energy consumption and can meet the yearly needs of over 3,000 families.
«With this plant – stated Lilli – TAL contributes in an environmentally friendly way to Austria’s energy supply increasing at the same time its energy efficiency. It is the first plant in the world in which crude oil turns into electricity with zero CO2 emissions».
