Update

The pipeline repair operations were completed on 30 December 2020, the damaged section is therefore now fully functional.

The ground cleaning operations are entering the final stages: it has been ascertained that the emergency suction systems prepared by SIOT, and provided for by the Oil Spill emergency plan, have worked as planned, limiting to a minimum fraction the quantity of crude oil that came in contact with the ground.

Repair work on the SIOT-TAL pipeline continued as planned today. The technicians are working according to schedule, with the aim of completing the restoration within the next week thus bringing the system back to full efficiency. The current operations fall within the framework of a normal technical repair-maintenance work and all the necessary checks have been initiated by SIOT-TAL.

This morning at 9.25 am, following core drilling operations related to soil analysis, a pipe that transfers the crude oil from the Marine Terminal to the SIOT-TAL pipeline Tank Park was damaged. The event took place on a plot of land near via Errera, in the industrial area of Trieste. The on-site teams immediately initiated emergency procedures.

The containment operations were completed at 2.50 pm. First of all, the pumping along the pipe was blocked, then the same pipe was de-pressurized, with the emptying initially carried out via tanker and then with the creation of a bypass which came into operation at 2 pm and directed the crude oil in a different line of the pipeline.

The third phase of the operations is currently underway and it involves an excavation to carry out the repairing of the pipe. All activities are taking place safely.

The SIOT-TAL pipeline is currently operating and has continued its activity using the other transfer lines.

“We are working with the utmost commitment to reactivate the pipeline in the shortest possible time – declared the President of SIOT and General Manager of the TAL Group Alessio Lilli – and at the same time we have started the necessary investigations to verify the dynamics of what happened and estimate the extent of the spill in the land surrounding the pipe, which seems to be contained thanks to the immediate intervention. Thanks go to the teams involved and the SIOT related operators who promptly reacted according to the procedures. Our commitment is focused on restoring optimal conditions and repairing the damage while keeping the public informed”.

Update at 6.30 pm

After the conclusion, at 14.50, of the containment and safety measures, repair operations began on the section of the SIOT-TAL pipeline damaged this morning during core drilling activities.

In the afternoon, excavation activities were carried out to bring to light the damaged pipe section and the action plan was defined to proceed with the repair.

During the night, while the site will remain manned, the area will be prepared for operations and the necessary materials will be prepared in the workshops.

The repair operations will therefore be put into operation starting tomorrow morning. The functionality of the Transalpine Pipeline has never been interrupted and continues along the other three transfer lines.
